Talented Tenth Scholar's Program

In 1903, W.E.B. Du Bois wrote: “The Talented Tenth rises and pulls all that are worth the saving up to their vantage ground.”  Du Bois hoped that this group of college-trained African Americans would become the “Talented Tenth” who would lead and uplift their communities.

The Talented Tenth Scholar’s Program has four main components:

1.)
Connecting young people with African American role models,
2.) Instruction in the Talented Tenth Scholar’s Empowerment
Curriculum, 3.) Community service, and 4.) Academic support.  This
culture-specific program targets African American males ages 13
through 18 who are on probation, Pretrial Diversion for minor law
violations, or referrals from Lincoln Public Schools.

Talented Tenth Scholar's Program Curriculum

The goal of the program is to help African American youth develop leadership skills, graduate from high school, and stay out of trouble.  They do so by interacting with 30 African American men who have volunteered and been trained to be part of the Talented Tenth program, and thereby support the youths in successfully completing the Pretrial Diversion Program as well as preventing youth on probation from violating their plan and ending up in detention.  Ultimately, the program strives to aid the youth in reaching their maximum potential personally, academically, and socially.
